The Hope Trust

The Hope Trust hails from Denton, TX, and brings a healthy blend of pop, americana, and straight up rock 'n' roll to their music. They've been compared to artists like Neil Finn (Crowded House) and Wilco. Kelly Upshaw's songs combine heart-wrenching, literate lyrics with a husky-yet-breathy voice and a healthy dose of rock to create high-energy show that's cerebral but accessible.

Raina Rose // Korby Lenker

FREE SHOW 21+

Raina Rose
Raina has toured relentlessly for the better part of the last ten years, supporting such acts as Jill Sobule, The Bacon Brothers, Loudon Wainwright III and Tracy Grammer, and sharing the stage with contemporaries such as John Elliott, Rebecca Loebe, Jonathan Byrd, AJ Roach, and Anthony da Costa. Now married to bass player, Andrew Pressman (Jimmie LaFave, Sam Baker, Ben Kweller, Carrie Elkin) and a mother of two young boys, Raina tours less often and more succinctly. After 8 years of living in a car and playing over 200 dates a year, this is a welcome change. Her travels have taken her everywhere across the USA and Europe, including such venues and gigs as the High Sierra Music Festival, Vancouver Island Music Festival, The Kerrville Folk Festival, The Cactus Cafe (Austin, TX), The Kessler Theater (Dallas, TX), Club Passim (Boston, MA), and The Birchmere (Alexandria, VA).

Korby Lenker is a sneaky-good songwriter. And singer. And multi-instrumentalist. An abbreviated list of Lenker's achievements so far includes: a significant amount of airplay on the legendary Seattle indie rock station KEXP; a BBC 2 interview with Bob Harris, which is only about the highest honor a rootsy singer-songwriter touring the U.K. can get; opening slots for acts ranging from Willie Nelson to Ray LaMontagne, Nickel Creek, Keith Urban, Susan Tedeschi and Tristan Prettyman; a successful run with one of the hottest young West Coast bluegrass bands of the aughts; and wins in the Merlefest folk songwriting contest as well as the Kerrville Folk Festival's elite New Folk songwriting competition.

“If you have not heard them before (where have you been?) just try to imagine what Tim Burton would have sounded like if he had created a band, instead of movies, just subtract the claymation and replace it with the musical genius of Paul Slavens and the poetic mastermind of Michael Constantine McConnell. But I think it is the deep and resonating vocals of Warren Jackson Hearne that attracts me the most to this band. Sky Window was formed as an experimental outlet for a group of musicians that met while studying jazz at the University Of North Texas in Denton. The band has evolved in many different facets over the years and is currently racing to the edge of exploration and genre-bending innovation. With a shared infatuation of modern jazz, electronic music and progressive rock, they came together to create a journey for the listener that is aggressive yet atmospheric. Skinny Cooks

Skinny Cooks
Born out of the discovery that their sound was very special, Skinny Cooks is a demonstration of amazing songwriting and performance virtuosity. Brianne Sargent and Nigel Newton first explored working together in mid-2011 when they met in Dallas and performed an impromptu headliner show, crafting three songs on the spot – leaving the audience wanting more.

Nigel later returned to Dallas after graduating from Berklee, hoping to establish an artistic career; he began collaborating with Brianne, a Dallas native who had returned to reconnect with her roots. Their work together is an undeniable artistic chemistry in an unlikely combination of vibraphone and cello. Influenced heavily by jazz, funk, rock, R&B, 20th century classical, and even gospel music, the duo has written more than 70 songs since their inception.

Since their first full band affair featuring Eric McFadden (P-Funk, Eric Bourdon), an exciting new buzz has been generated in both the Deep Ellum and online radio communities. In live performances, Skinny Cooks is showcased with a dynamic horn section and a consistently groovy, toe-tapping rhythm section. They played a monthly residency with the hip-hop duo 2w0 E1even, featuring Mic Most and Grammy Award-winning producer Jah Born.

Matthew and The Arrogant Sea / Wirewings

FREE SHOW 21+

Matthew And The Arrogant Sea
Matthew and The Arrogant Sea (MATAS) is an Alt Folk / Psychedelic Pop act from Denton, TX. The band has received numerous accolades and notable press from around the globe, since its inception in the early 2000s. Heralded with praise from outlets such as Daytrotter, NME, Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, Stereogum, Good Morning Texas, and NPR, alongside the exuberant praise from their national debut, Family, Family, Family, Meets the Magic Christian in 2008—being named one of the best records to be released in North Texas in the last decade.

“This is the weird that comes from someone with a tuned-in brain that sidesteps the obvious and makes terrifically melodic and dense studies in idiosyncratic lives. It's the weird that you get when you're at peace with your weirdness, not the kind you get if you're completely unaware that there's anything at all odd about you. Gray seems like he could be a television and cinema junkie as well, pulling in ideas and fragments of ideas that suggest a short attention span, but one that's hungry for more content to mess around with. He sings of Martian petting zoos and romanticizes about standing around and holding hands as he and some her looked at the submarines.
One of the most intriguing things that Matthew and The Arrogant Sea does is shirks generalities. No one is just coming to see someone. They're riding a broken bicycle. No one's doing anything that we normally think about, or are giving in other songs. These are very specific relics of something real and extremely graphic that happened, or tremendous musical novellas that have beginnings, middles, and ends—hearts and souls that are plump, weird and delicious.” -Sean Moeller, Daytrotter

Wirewings
From the fertile music scene of North Texas comes a band consumed with rhythm, atmosphere and energy – Wirewings. Rob Peters (vocals & guitar) and Tyler Walker (drums & electronics) formed Wirewings out of the ashes of their previous project, Raised By Tigers, and added Tyler Browder (keys) and Jarrod Greene (bass) to complete the band. With influences ranging from the hypnotic sounds of Blonde Redhead, Unwound, and Broadcast to krautrock, afro-beat, post-punk and post-rock influences, they've been tirelessly working away in the laboratory perfecting each chord, smack, crash, bloop and bleep.

GEEKS WHO DRINK - TRIVIA NIGHT - EVERY MONDAY AT 8PM

Flex those big brains of yours and join us for Harvest House pub quiz trivia night, brought to you by Geeks Who Drink - D/FW

Geeks Who Drink is a Denver-based company that hosts Bar Trivia at over 600 pubs and restaurants in 35 states. Our quiz is a collective effort of dozens of quizmasters, writers, fact-checkers, graphic designers and artists.

What’s a pub quiz?

Simply, a quiz game played in a pub: to foster friendly competition, and promote social drinking. A noble cause!

Isn't that just “trivia night”?

No, and no. Most so-called “trivia nights” consist of either an MP3J reading Trivial Pursuit cards in between bad music, or a bunch of people staring at TVs with buzzers in hand. Our quiz burns through nearly 70 multimedia questions in two exciting hours. The quizmaster gets to know the players, and smack talk flying around in all directions is pretty much par for the course.

Does it cost anything?

Nope. This is a free event.

Do I need to sign up beforehand or can I just show up and play?

Just show up. Team size is limited to six. Play solo if you'd like, but don't blame us if you're lonely.

All right, so what’s in it for me?

Besides a couple hours of free entertainment, the top teams get bar gift certificates. Plus there are chances to win free pints (or gift-certificate equivalents) for answering five bonus questions throughout the evening. We also have bizarre prizes courtesy of our weekly Bonus Email Question. Finally, your team can revel in the eternal glory of having your photo posted on this here website.

Is the quiz hard?

In general, the quiz starts off easy and progresses in difficulty as the night goes on. Also, the quiz is set up to reward the most versatile teams. Most folks over 35 will be stumped on questions about the Xbox 360, while most folks under 35 know little about the Reagan years. And just about everyone is stumped when we throw in a round on country music.
To get a feel for our questions check out a sample round here.

What's the quiz format like?

The quiz consists of eight rounds of eight questions each, played by teams of up to six people. Questions are read aloud by the quizmaster and teams write down the answers, turning them in at the end of each round.
Rounds 1, 4 and 6 are themed rounds – anything from “Eight Questions About Sex That Won’t Make You Too Uncomfortable” to “TV Shows Your Parents Watch.” Round 2 is a music round worth double points: name the artist and title for each song clip. Round 3 is a multiple choice round or a speed round. Round 5 is a visual round based on a printed handout. The all-audio Round 7 usually covers movies or TV shows, and is worth the standard eight points. Finally, Round 8 is always 16 points on Random Knowledge.
One round can be jokered, doubling your points for that round only (yes, the 16-point rounds are fair game). The team with the most points after eight rounds is the winner.

See you on Monday.

Jon Wayne and the Pain
For nearly a decade, electronic reggae-dub innovators Jon Wayne and The Pain have been crafting a unique sound, one that features a mesmerizing blend of modern age electronic beats fused with upbeat traditional roots reggae and a fresh layer of grooving funk to keep the soul moving in all the right ways. The Twin Cities-based ensemble burst onto the festival scene in 2007 following their debut self-titled album, and has since built a highly devoted following through multi-dimensional jamming, extensive touring and thoughtful, relevant songwriting. Inscrutable and unpredictable, Jon Wayne and The Pain’s cutting edge style has taken them across the nation to some of the country’s biggest music festivals including Electric Forest, Summer Camp, Cali Roots and Wakarusa. Their transcendent live performances and fluid chemistry has propelled them to the forefront of a new generation of reggae music, and with an ever-changing musical landscape, it is evident that this Midwestern quartet is becoming a force to be reckoned with.

Jon Wayne and The Pain is:

The Birds of Night // Dove Hunter

The Birds of Night

Birds of Night formed in late 2011. After releasing their jangley, sixties-inspired first album, “Snaps,” they became a fixture in the Denton/Dallas/Ft. Worth music scene. The band released their second album “We’re a Family Now” in spring of 2013. Influential Dallas Culture blog Central Track named it one of the top DFW releases that year. In the past 2 years Birds of Night have supported acts like Mac Demarco, Thee Oh Sees, Diarrhea Planet, Tennis, The Love Language, and Futurebirds. After losing a drummer and guitar player, Andrew Rothlisberger (vocals, guitar) and Brooks Martin (bass) enlisted the help of Jon Aisner (drums) and Alex Adams (Guitar). The chemistry between them was undeniable. That chemistry lies at the heart of their sound.
